New hub offers information on flood insurance, preparedness and recovery
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 3, 2026) — Nearly every Florida community faces some level of flood risk, whether from storm surge, overflowing rivers, heavy rainfall, or localized flash flooding. As the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins, the Personal Insurance Federation of Florida (PIFF) is launching FloodReadyFlorida.com, a new consumer-focused resource designed to help Floridians prepare for the floods that often come with storms, understand their risk, and recover more quickly after disaster strikes.
The webpage serves as a centralized hub for information related to flood insurance, flood preparedness, mitigation, and post-flood recovery. The site connects visitors with trusted resources from state agencies, emergency management officials, insurance experts, and organizations specializing in disaster preparedness and resilience.
“One of the most important things Floridians can do is prepare for the possibility of flooding before a storm is on the radar,” said Michael Carlson, president of PIFF. “While hurricane categories are based on wind speed, water is often the deadliest hazard. Experts note that flooding from storm surge and heavy rainfall causes far more deaths than wind alone, and flooding can occur hundreds of miles from the coast. Simply put: anywhere it rains, it can flood.”
The launch of FloodReadyFlorida.com comes as forecasters predict a less active Atlantic hurricane season in 2026. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts 8 to 14 named storms, including 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major hurricanes, giving the season a 55 percent chance of being below normal. However, experts consistently caution that seasonal forecasts do not eliminate risk. NOAA officials have emphasized that “it only takes one” storm to cause devastating impacts.
History has repeatedly demonstrated that significant hurricanes can occur even during quieter seasons. The 1992 Atlantic hurricane season was relatively inactive overall but produced Hurricane Andrew, one of the most destructive storms in U.S. history.
While many homeowners associate flooding with coastal storm surge, flooding can occur far inland from heavy rainfall, tropical systems, slow-moving thunderstorms, and other weather events. Flood damage can occur outside of high-risk flood zones, making it important for Floridians to understand their property’s specific risk and evaluate whether flood insurance may be appropriate.
FloodReadyFlorida.com includes:
- Information on flood insurance and where consumers can learn about available coverage options.
- Resources to help homeowners understand their property’s flood risk.
- Links to preparedness tips and storm planning resources.
- Information on home hardening, mitigation, and resilience measures that can help reduce damage.
- Recovery resources for individuals and families impacted by flooding and other disasters.
“Preparedness is the best insurance,” Carlson added. “FloodReadyFlorida.com brings together trusted information from trusted experts and agencies to help consumers make informed decisions. The peril of flood has quickly become synonymous with hurricane season in Florida. The more Floridians know, the more resilient our state will become.”
The hub was developed as part of PIFF’s ongoing efforts to support consumer education and promote informed decision-making before, during, and after severe weather events. Floridians can visit FloodReadyFlorida.com to explore resources.
