Personal Insurance Federation of Florida Applauds Work to Mitigate Flood Risk
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., (May 12, 2021) – The Personal Insurance Federation of Florida (PIFF) today applauded Governor Ron Desantis for signing Senate Bill 1954, a bill sponsored by Senator Ray Rodrigues (R-Fort Myers), Representative Demi Busatta Cabrera (R-Miami) and championed by Senate President Wilton Simpson (R-Trilby) and House Speaker Chris Sprowls (R-Palm Harbor).
“A more resilient Florida will be beneficial to homeowners and insurance consumers, and it has been encouraging to see bipartisan support for this policy throughout session,” said Michael Carlson, president and CEO of PIFF. “Amid rising sea levels, mitigating flood risk starting at the community level and building our understanding of local vulnerabilities will help protect Florida homeowners and decrease flood insurance risks for the long-term.”
This law will establish the Resilient Florida Grant Program within the Department of Environmental Protection and require the department to complete a comprehensive statewide flood vulnerability and sea level rise data set and assessment. The department will also be required to develop an annual Statewide Flooding and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan, which will be submitted to the Governor and Legislature. The department will be implementing a scoring system for assessing projects eligible for inclusion in the annual plan.
